“Another cool way to spice up your blues shuffle is by using the major pentatonic scale,†says Johnson. Claude demonstrates the major pentatonic scale in the key of B as follows: 4th fret of the 6th string with first finger to the 7th fret with 4th finger to the 4th fret of the 5th string with first finger to the 6th fret with 3rd finger and then repeat that sequence for strings four and three and then 4th fret of the 2nd string with first finger to the 6th fret with 4th finger and then repeat that sequence for the first string. Johnson continues by demonstrating the shuffle rhythm as follows: 7th fret of the 6th string with first finger and 9th fret of the 5th string with 2nd finger, strummed twice as 1/8 notes (1 &) and then switches the note of the 5th string to the 11th fret with 4th finger and strums it twice, also as 1/8th notes (2 &) and then repeats the whole sequence to make one m easure of four beats (1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &). Next Claude plays one measure of the shuffle rhythm and follows it with licks based out of the major pentatonic scale and then back to the rhythm.
