The Indy Star reported on Feb. 2nd that a change in legislation will soon release low offending prisoners to jail in Franklin County. Key applications of the patented Pantomimeâ„¢ technology include realistic 3D mobile games and online multi-user social networks, where users can accurately swing virtual paddles, handle objects, move and see their virtual hands, and control avatar bodies with expressive body language.

For the immersive head-mounted displays usually associated with virtual reality, Pantomime’s solution provides a much needed way to reach in and interact.

In many applications of the patented technology, no virtual reality headset or other wearable device is needed.  Users can reach into virtual worlds with the tablets and smart phones they already own, seeing the worlds through ordinary computer and mobile screens, and optionally, through VR headsets as well.

PATENTED MOBILE TRACKING SOLUTION
The navigation method in the issued patent, a support and geometry based method, enables fast, accurate motion tracking with low latencies, high frame rates, no jitter or drift, and no need for a camera or vision processing.  This allows the software to finely track real 3D user motions in the virtual world, in part by knowing the size and shape of the device it is running on.  Any mobile device with standard sensors becomes a gyro-stabilized 3D game controller or VR paddle.  A mobile device with a screen and a rear-facing camera becomes a glass portal into virtual reality, while computers with front-facing cameras become VR portals with built-in mirrors.

Since the Pantomime algorithms track relative motion, users can move through the virtual world by walking or tumbling a device across a real table; or they can keep the device in one place and ‘pantomime’ the steps and motion across the table.  Users can thus keep the mobile device at a comfortable distance without disturbing the virtual world, or can carry it with them anywhere.  Users can also move and turn in the world by touching the mobile screen.  This provides users the ultimate freedom to reach in and to move, or not to move, when playing.

MAKES VIRTUAL REALITY INTERACTIVE
Dr. Levitt was an inventor and product manager at VPL Research, the firm that coined the term Virtual Reality and sold the first commercial systems in the 1990s.  The VPL system included a 3D device for reaching in and interacting in virtual worlds known as the DataGlove.  Today’s emerging VR systems, such as the Oculus DK-2 and the Samsung Gear VR introduced last year, provide no direct way to reach in in 3D.  Instead, devices from other vendors for reaching in may cost $ 300 or more â€" more than the cost of the VR headset.

Because these systems have lacked native reach-in technology, early Virtual Reality experiences typically let users look around but allow very little interaction.  Instead of reaching in, users may turn their heads to face an object in the world and then tap a trackpad on their temple to select it, or operate a game joystick in their lap while neither their hands nor the joystick is visible in the virtual world.

In contrast, Pantomime users interact easily by moving ordinary mobile devices.  They can see them all in the shared virtual world, along with animation of their hands and the table supporting them; and can handle any virtual tool or avatar they’d like to control in 3D.

With 85 million views and counting, "Love Has No Labels" is a bonafide hit. While its message of unbiased love helped make this video go viral, the technical effects were just as potent. Pairing people with Xsens mocap sensors, experiential design firm Mindride was able to take their 3D skeletons out for a live event. No strings, no wires, no problem.

Love Has No Labels is a program created by The Ad Council to point out subconscious biases people have regarding race, age, gender, religion, sexuality, and disabilities. Filmed live on the street, the viral PSA depicts an LED screen where skeletons hug, kiss and dance before revealing themselves as people to the audience. Variations include same sex, elderly and interracial couples, provoking the audience to consider that maybe we are all the same underneath it all.

To create the “Love Has No Labels” X-Ray machine, Mindride developed an entirely new pipeline that leveraged motion capture techniques typically reserved for Hollywood movies and video games. By employing Xsens MVN, a wearable motion capture system, the team could stream the actor’s movements in real-time as live mocap data. That data was then fed into a rendering computer that animated the 3D skeletons.

Helping the characters interact with each other and believably look like they were in the same space was a key priority. To facilitate this, a midi controller was used to control and reposition characters during the performance. This proved useful for situations that involved hugging or hand holding.

“Once we had the data mapped to the skeletons, we became puppeteers, augmenting the gestural nuances of the performers’ hands and jaws,” said Yehuda Duenyas, Chief Creative Officer at Mindride. “The result was a totally live, real-time, magical, X-Ray experience that highlighted the nuance and individuality of each performer.”

Preparations for the project began months in advance, with the team testing the Xsens sensors for live applications. Deciding on 17 sensors, placed over key areas like body joints, arms, legs and the actor’s neck, Mindride found a mix that could give them the motion capture data they needed to make those skeletons pass the people test.

“Ultimately we were trying to figure out how to make the skeletons move in the most human way possible,” added Duenyas. “After rigging the avatars in Maya, and lining them up with MVN data, it quickly became clear that we had the quality we needed.”

Another draw was MVN’s lightweight design and wireless capabilities. “The trackers really aren’t that big; you can hide them under your clothes,” said Michael Todd, Technical Lead at Mindride. “They are easy to take off and put on; don’t require any extensive set-up that has to be fine-tuned and calibrated. The system is just really easy to use.”

With mobility becoming more important to motion capture projects, Xsens’ patented design lies at the forefront of the field.

“MVN opens up a lot of potential for live applications. What we are really doing is digitally translating human behavior and human action. And if we can deliver that in a live capacity, that’s really exciting,” said Duenyas.

The 2014 Verto Ecosystems Report revealed that, despite the state of competition between major device platforms being stable, many consumers are shifting their usage from one device to another. The installed base of smartphones, tablets, smart TVs, and streaming media devices continues to grow strong, while PCs, portable media players and electronic book readers are being replaced by other devices.

Key data points found in the report include:

The installed base of smartphones, tablets, smart TVs and streaming media devices keeps growing strongly: the number of adult smartphone users in the US grew from 135M to 150M, and tablet users from 98M to 107M. PCs, portable media players and electronic book readers are being replaced by smartphones and tablets; the number of adult computer users decreased by 4M. Apple has kept its share in the installed base of both smartphones (42 percent) and tablets (43 percent). Samsung has grown in both tablets (from 12 to 15 percent) and in smartphones (from 27 to 29 percent). Amazon’s share of the tablets in use has decreased from 22 to 18 percent. The aggregate number of digital devices used by US adults is now 1.12B equalizing as 4.6 devices per user. The average number of smartphones, tablets and computers used by an average US adult is 2.8 devices. The reach of wearables doubled in 2014, to 6M adult users. No changes in platform positions. Microsoft continues to dominate PCs, Apple and Google split the smartphone and tablet user base. In TV-centric home entertainment and video streaming, the device market is still fragmented and no dominant platforms exist. Apple users are very loyal to the platform, Android users to a lesser extent. Multi-device ownership of Apple devices grows in tandem with income, but the same does not hold true for Android. Apple’s share of PC, smartphone, and tablet users correlates highly with income - age and gender are less important determinants. Android uses are more likely to own desktop PCs, video game consoles, and wearable computers than iOS users, whereas iOS users are more likely to own streaming media devices. Cross-selling opportunities exist still in in the PC, smartphone, and tablet markets, to existing platform users.
