Claude demonstrates the shuffle rhythm in the key of G as follows: 3rd fret of the 6th string with first finger and 5th fret of the 5th string with 2nd finger, strummed twice as 1/8 notes (1 &) and then switches the note of the 5th string to the 7th fret with 4th finger and strums it twice, also as 1/8th notes (2 &) and then repeats the whole sequence to make one measure of four beats (1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &). This sequence is the one chord and for the four chord Johnson moves the whole sequence up to the 8th fret and then to the 10th fret for the five chord. The 12 Bar Blues Progression is one of the most common chord progressions in popular music. It is most commonly based on the 1-4-5 or 1-4-5-b6 (flat 6) chord progressions. The last two measures are usually a turnaround. The Turnaround is used in many styles of music. The Blues Turnaround or V, VI, I (5-4-1) Turnaround came from the Ragtime Blues era. The cadence of the Blues Turnaround is backwards from traditional western music. The job of the Blues Turnaround is to show the listener where the chord progression ends and starts over; it does this by ending on the V (five) of the chord progression making it want to resolve back to the I (one).
