“I want to give you another power chord lesson today”, says Johnson, “hopefully you are familiar with this basic shape”. Claude demonstrates the shape that he is using as follows; 7th fret of the 6th string with first finger, 9th fret of the 5th string with 3rd finger and 9th fret of the 4th string with 4th finger. “One way you can spice this up is to turn it into a quazy seventh chord”, says Johnson. Claude demonstrates how to do this by adding his 2nd finger to the 8th fret of the 4th string and alternating between the 8th and 9th fret by lifting his 4th finger on and off while strumming the whole chord shape. Claude continues by performing a variety of variances of this chord shape so you can get a lot of ideas for playing these types of power chords. Guitar TAB’s are available for this easy rhythm guitar lesson at GuitarControl.com.

A Power Chord on guitar is a two note chord consisting of the root note and the perfect fifth of the major scale. Sometimes called the fifth chord, these chords are a key element of rock music.

The major scale, aka the Ionian Mode, is a seven tone diatonic scale that is widely used in western music. The eighth duplicates the first at double its frequency so that it is called a higher octave of the same note, which its name is derived from Latin "octavus", the eighth.
