Indisious Franchise's Angus Sampson Discusses His Upcoming Movie The Mule and Gives Update on Insidious: Chapter 3 During Appearance on Schmoes Know Movie Show

Angus Sampson, best known as for his role of Tucker in the Insidious franchise, makes an appearance on the Schmoes Know Movie Show. Sampson discusses his upcoming movie The Mule, what it was like to work with Hugo Weaving and gives an update on Indisious: Chapter 3.

The Mule, which opens in limited release on November 21st, tells the somewhat true story of a man who gets caught smuggling heroin into Australia and refuses to defecate in hopes of avoiding giving evidence to the police. On how the film came about, Sampson says, “Leigh Whannell, who I knew off a television show in Australia, had created a film franchise called Saw and then he wrote another one called Insidious. We got a friend of ours who’d given me a script about a gentleman who is coerced into not doing the right thing when he goes on an end of season football trip, which is to smuggle heroin back into Australia. He’s properly caught and learns that without any evidence, the police can’t do anything. They can only hold him for seven days, so he decides to try to not go to the bathroom. We just really wanted to make a really unique, entertaining film, and for Leigh and I, we’ve just never seen this premise before! Ever!”

To prepare for the film, Sampson practiced getting the feel for what his character was going through. He says, “We kind of practiced with grapes. Basically you have to swallow things whole. It’s not important that he poos them out, it’s that he swallows them. We weren’t swallowing the grapes to see if they came out the other end like a baby eating corn. I mean, that was a bonus. That’s on the blu-ray.”

On the film’s tone, Sampson wanted to make sure that people didn’t view it simply as a comedy, despite the hilarious premise. “When you hear the premise that a gentleman tries to not go to the bathroom for a week, you kind of think Harold and Kumar or kind of like a Wayans Brothers type thing. We’ve tried to put it much more in the tone â€" and I know every aspiring filmmaker says this â€" but we were really inspired I guess by The Sopranos and Fargo. For us, we’ve set it in this suburban world, which the Coens do very well. We’re not saying that we’re anything like them but... it’s an incredibly brutal film, much like Fargo is. But you have to laugh because it’s the only way of dealing with the domesticity of the act.”

The movie also features the great Hugo Weaving as a cop and one of the many people in the film who become annoyed with the main character’s refusal to go to the bathroom. On working with Weaving, Sampson says, “The exciting thing is that our stunt coordinator, Chris Anderson, would get Hugo to say ‘Good morning, Mr. Anderson’ all the time. It was great. He’s a glorious individual.”
