R. Todd Campbell released his latest film The Mourning Hills for a preview screening last Saturday.

The Mourning Hills is a coming-of-age story centered around two young sisters, Mattie and Kate, who decide to run away from home. They soon become lost in the Mourning Hills: a vast and eerie wilderness that’s known to be to a location where people go to commit suicide, including their father. In order to survive, they’re forced to contend with the elements of nature and other people who wander throughout the hills.

A majority of the film was shot in North Alabama, with a cast and crew from both New Orleans and The Shoals area of Alabama. Director R. Todd Campbell grew up in The Shoals area of Alabama, and is a filmmaker from New Orleans. Campbell has written and directed several films over the past decade, including the short narratives, Dear Theodosia (2009), The Ninth Step (2009), and the award-winning short documentary, Torch (2010).

Campbell expressed, "I have always had an affinity for simplicity in film, and that is the approach I’ve taken with The Mourning Hills. I wanted a minimal number of characters, existing in an accessible world that could be actualized with a small crew and an even smaller budget. While developing the script, I knew that I wanted to explore the question of what happens to a person when innocence is lost, but the theme became much more than I originally intended."

Campbell’s plan was to center the story around strong female leads, an area that’s lacking in the film industry. “I didn’t start out writing something to be a feminist movie, but it is about two strong young ladies and they’re overcoming something impossible.” Both Chelsea Bryan (Mattie) and Carol Jean Wells (Kate) brilliantly show their abilities to captivate audiences in this thriller.

This Saturday, December 20th, there will be another preview screening in Florence, AL. The first notify date of the films acceptance or denial into a festival is December 31st, which will be for the Washington D.C. Independent Film Festival, held in February of next year.
