Schaumburg and Wheaton family lawyers Christopher J. Maurer and Kelly L. Petersen, Associates Attorneys of Anderson & Associates, P.C., were included in Volume 27 of the DCBA Brief. The DCBA Brief is a publication of the DuPage County Bar Association. The monthly magazine reaches over 2,600 legal professionals with the goal of providing current and comprehensive information about the association, the DuPage County legal community, and developments in the law itself.

Christopher J. Maurer authored the article entitled, “Violent Video Games, the First Amendment, and Child Custody.” Within this article Maurer reaches from his own experience to explore the consideration of video games with mature themes from the viewpoint of attorneys who practice in the area of child custody. Maurer recounts the Supreme Court case, Brown v. Entertainment Merchants Association, and explains how a parent permitting a child’s exposure to such games could arguably be relevant to a court’s determination of that parent’s custody or visitation rights.

In his article, Maurer states, “Although the domestic relations laws of Illinois are silent on the subject, a parent’s exposure of a child to such games could arguably be relevant to a court’s determination of that parent’s custody or visitation rights.”

Wheaton family law attorney Christopher J. Maurer is an Associate Attorney at Anderson & Associates, P.C., where he has concentrated his practice in family law for over 12 years. Kelly L. Petersen’s article entitled, “Til Get Us Do Part When Illinois Divorce Law and Jewish Religious Law Intersect,” discusses the issues divorcees face when they conform to the Jewish Orthodox faith. More specifically, the article touches on Jewish law, known as the Halakah, in relation to divorce, secular court enforcement on Jewish premarital agreements, religious arbitration panels and limiting the power of the Beth Din.

Petersen states, “For divorcees who conform to the Jewish Orthodox faith, a secular divorce may not be the end of the line. In reaction to this issue, the Jewish community and secular courts have considered a number of measures meant to utilize both the authority of the secular court system and of Jewish law to induce both parties’ cooperation in the Jewish divorce process, including the enforcement of Jewish premarital agreements and utilization of religious arbitration panels.”
