Aloha: Riverside Health System Celebrates National Nursing Home Week

Newport News, VA (PRWEB) May 16, 2014

From building and opening the first fully deinstitutionalized household model nursing home in Virginia, to bringing more elements of home life to the frontline of all its residences, Riverside Health System is changing the way older adults and their loved ones think about nursing homes.

“We don’t just speak our mission statement â€" as I age, I will control my destiny in a place of my choosing â€" we make decisions about how our nursing homes operate to make them a place that people choose to live in their older adults years,” said Bob Bryant, Riverside’s Senior Vice President of the Lifelong Health and Aging Related Services Division.

“We take choice very seriously and are honored each time a family chooses a Riverside nursing home.”

The attributes of a nursing home and the staff that helps bring them alive are at the center of this year’s celebration of National Nursing Home Week, recognized this year from May 11 to 17.

“National Nursing Home Week is a way for today’s care communities to proactively communicate that skilled care centers are light years ahead of what may be thought of as Grandma’s nursing home,” according to the American Healthcare Association.

Earlier this week in Hampton, Va. Mayor George E. Wallace delivered a proclamation at the Riverside Rehabilitation Center there highlighting the City Council’s commitment to improving programing for their aging citizens and those with disabilities.

“Our administration is committed to improving programs that assist older Americans and people with disabilities in achieving their goals, and we embrace the ‘Aloha Spirit’ to show older adults and persons with disabilities patience, kindness, respect and compassion,” Wallace said.

This year, the national association selected Living the Aloha Spirit as the theme of the week and Riverside nursing homes took that theme and planned carnivals, pig roasts and more to celebrate their residents and staff.

“The word ‘aloha’ has a deeper significance than just a fond farewell,” the association wrote on its web site. “By Living the Aloha Spirit, we show others love and respect and joyfully share life in order to create a better world.”

Key attributes of the spirit include kindness, patients and a respect of others.

“We have 10 nursing homes across Virginia and there is definitely a sense of ‘aloha’ at each one,” Bryant said. “Each is so unique, located along Main Streets in small towns and just outside the heart of Hampton Roads’ core cities. But at every one, our staff truly believes that in order to care, truly care, for the wonderful people we serve, we must care for the entire person.”
