These days, buying gifts for kids can be really expensive. Children are bought electronic devices, games consoles and other costly gadgets more than they are given traditional toys and games. This can leave parents feeling the pinch, but is there a way to find more affordable gifts that will still keep the kids happy?

Here are a few ideas:

    Clothes and shoes. Buy your child sweatshirts, T-shirts and even pyjamas and bed covers featuring their favourite TV or game character and they will absolutely love the gift. Remember though, kids have a new hero every few weeks, so you might struggle to keep up.

    Art supplies. Encourage your child’s creative side with paints, colouring pencils and craft supplies. They may complain about not getting an electronic gadget, but they’ll soon forget about once they start having fun with paints.

    Science equipment. There are many safe, fun and engrossing chemistry or astronomy kits for kids, which have both entertainment and educational benefits.

    Activity books. Similarly to arts and crafts supplies, these activity books are so engrossing and fun that your child will forget all about their Nintendo DS.

    Use discount vouchers. If your kids will accept nothing less than expensive games consoles and other electronic gadgets, why not buy them for less by using discount codes to drive the cost down a bit? Many voucher codes are available online for a range of stores, and you could save as much as 70 per cent or maybe even more by using them.
