GuitarControl.com released a new video guitar lesson from GuitarControl.com instructor and creator Claude Johnson. In this guitar lesson, now available on YouTube.com, Claude Johnson teaches how to play major seventh chords on guitar.
“Today I want to show you how to play a major seventh chordâ€, says Johnson, “they have a very spiritual soundâ€. Claude starts off by playing a section of the song Waiting in Vein by Bob Marley which uses the chords GM7 (G major seven) and CM7 (C major seven) so you can hear an example of the chords. Claude continues by demonstrating the open position Major Seventh chords as follows. AM7; open 5th string, 2nd fret 4th string with 2nd finger, first fret 3rd string with first finger, 2nd fret 2nd string with 3rd finger and open first string. Johnson skips BM7 because he says that it is actually a bar chord. CM7; 3rd fret 5th string with 3rd finger, 2nd fret 4th string with 2nd finger and first, 2nd and 3rd strings open. DM7; open 4th string and first finger bared across the 2nd fret of the first three strings. EM7; open 6th string, 2nd fret 5th string with 4th finger, first fret 4th string with 2nd finger, first fret 3rd string with 3rd finger and first and 2nd string s open. FM7; 3rd fret of the 4th string with 3rd finger, 2nd fret of the 3rd string with 2nd finger first fret of the 2nd string with first finger and first string open. And finally GM7; 3rd fret of the 6th string with 2nd finger, 2nd fret of the 5th string with first finger, 3rd and 2nd strings open and 2nd fret first string with 3rd finger. A major seventh chord is a chord consisting of a triad plus a note forming an interval of a seventh above the chord's root, a major triad together with a seventh.
The major scale, aka the Ionian Mode, is a seven tone diatonic scale that is widely used in western music. The eighth duplicates the first at double its frequency so that it is called a higher octave of the same note, which its name is derived from Latin "octavus", the eighth.
