New Indie Film Redefines What It Means To Be An American.

American Breakdown, a new movie by veteran filmmaker Paul Schattel, is a dark comedy about a struggling musician and his down-and-out country band who find themselves stranded in a backwoods Southern town. The film blends an eccentric cast of characters with shifting elements of identity, nationality and gender.
American Breakdown features the debut of Latino performer Henry Rojas, a Mexican-American “gender-fluid†artist who has never acted before. Veteran film director Paul Schattel met Rojas on a documentary called Ms. Gay Latina, about a North Carolina transgender Latino beauty pageant, and decided to cast Rojas even though he had no prior acting experience.
Schattel, who is originally from Alabama, intimately knows the rhythms of the rural South and is acutely aware of the region's changing demographics. “With the films' blending of the more traditional white Southern culture and Mr. Rojas' fascinating trans-cultural and transgender experience, we get to explore certain social conventions from a very unexpected place.â€
Writer/Director Paul Schattel and his production company, Harrow Beauty Motion Pictures, have won many industry awards, including “Best Director†and “Best Screenplay†for Alison. His films Sinkhole, Alison and the just-completed Quiet River have garnered much attention and praise.
Director of Photography Steve Agnew owns Rock Creek Productions, a North Carolina-based company that has produced everything from feature films, music videos and short films, and even the employee training films for the TSA and the Border Patrol.
